A Retreat at the Farm

12.5008° N,77.7785° E

Nestled along a dense elephant trail, the site is a part of a 3-acre farmland located in the hilly hinterlands of Denkanikottai, a rural development in Tamil Nadu, India. A Retreat at the Farm is designed with utmost sensitivity towards limited availability of resources given the remote location of the site.

The 2200 sq. ft. home features a simple, elegant design centered around a courtyard that connects the living and kitchen areas while opening out to surrounding crop fields for panoramic views.

It has deep sloped projections to block harsh sunlight and create deep recessed, shadowed spaces. Bedrooms are positioned on either side of the living area for easy access to common zones, with each space thoughtfully crafted for natural lighting and ventilation. All these spaces look out into the pool, strategically placed at the center of the landscape to maximize the views into the hills.

Constructed on a modest budget, the home uses local materials and craftsmen, including Maxlite AAC blocks for thermal efficiency and Bilwara wood for doors and windows. The interior design takes inspiration from Mediterranean themes, with handcrafted furniture from Sunshine Boulevard in Bangalore that complements the architecture and highlights craftsmanship.
