The National School of Business (NSB) in Bangalore offers graduate and post-graduate courses in business management and has gained a strong reputation for its holistic and collaborative teaching approach. To accommodate its rapid growth, NSB planned a new academic center next to its existing campus. This project aimed to create a landmark building that reflects the school's community ethos while meeting extensive programmatic needs.
The project faced several challenges:
-
Tight deadlines, with only one academic year for completion and a 10-day design phase, leading to a simple, flexible layout.
-
Limited buildable area due to proximity to a railway line and local regulations, resolved by splitting the layout into two wings with a central outdoor spine.
-
Meeting programmatic requirements from the education board.
The academic block features raked lecture halls and adaptable classrooms for 300 students, while the faculty block includes 40 staff rooms and accessible conference spaces. The design emphasizes natural light, ventilation, and passive cooling, using locally sourced materials like wire-cut bricks for insulation and aesthetic appeal. Future plans include a second floor and a sheltered entrance.
